Binz, Vietnam’s Rap Poet, Rises With ‘Bigcityboi’

Binz (pronounced Bin-Z) is gaining recognition in Vietnam and internationally. “Bigcityboi” is the most recent single by Vietnam’s Poet of Rap, and within 12 hours of the track’s music video’s release on YouTube on July 5, it reached the Top Trending page in many countries.

Vietnam’s hip-hop community has wholly adopted the rapper as a fixture. In 2008, he made his debut in the underground hip-hop community. He spent the next decade working his way up the ranks, eventually establishing his rap brand within the community. Early in his career, he joined SpaceSpeakers, a collection of like-minded musicians and artists.

The sound produced by Binz is unusual. His velvety lyrical approach flows effortlessly into his signature vocal flow, which some consider romantic. Binz’s music has also been affected by the American hip-hop scene; after living in the United States, one can frequently detect such elements in his tracks. Binz is renowned as a “Poet” in the Rap Viet community and serves as a judge and mentor on a popular Vietnamese reality television program with the same title. The aired program focuses on searching for the next rap superstar in Vietnam.

Binz’s music has a wide range of tones, ranging from soft and romantic to smooth and cold rap. He has done an excellent job of combining these elements, developing his style for singles like “Gi,” “Bên Anh êm Nay,” and “Hoa Hng Di.”

With the release of “They Said,” Binz’s career hit a new turning point as he adopted a harsher sound. Binz proceeded in this approach, assuming a “street” image for his music, which was not well welcomed by all of his followers, despite receiving mixed reviews. Although he remains loyal to his famous hallmark sound with songs such as “SoFar,” “OK,” and “Sao Cng c” (“Anyway”), he has also committed to presenting his new style with hits such as “Nguyên Team I Vào Ht” (“The Whole Team Comes In”), “Krazy,” and “Gene.”

This leads us to his most recent album, “Bigcityboi,” published in July 2020. The song demonstrates Binz’s commitment to his new approach and “street” vibe. “Bigcityboi” has become Binz’s most famous song due to its “bad guy” lyrics. After its release, “Bigcityboi” was featured on Spotify’s “Top Hits Vietnam” playlist, and the YouTube video has received over 55 million views as of press time.

Indeed, Binz has come a long way since his beginnings. His early years were arduous and sometimes disheartening, similar to many other artists. He was informed that he did not fit today’s musical trend. Fortunately, Binz was resolved to disregard the negative remarks, and after rejecting the negativity surrounding him, he began to develop. Binz says, “Only when I have genuine passion and love for something do I no longer feel the pressure. If there were no severe comments, I would not be seated here at this moment.”

Binz persevered and maintained his enthusiasm for particular fashions. Binz’s song “Bigcityboi” demonstrates that the route to success is never a straight one.

Binz desires the freedom to explore and experiment with innovative new ideas and to be at the top of his game moving forward. He states, “This is the song I wish to perform.”
