Harry Potter to UN’s Goodwill Ambassador : Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson

“It’s Leviosa, not Leviosaaa”, sounds familiar? of course it does. We have all grown up watching Harry Potter and we have all grown up dreaming about receiving our acceptance letter from Hogwarts. If you still haven’t figured out who I am talking about here, let me break it down for you. Emma Watson in full Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson, born on April 15, 1990, in Paris, France. Yes, our very own Hermione Granger who we all adored growing up. Apart from her successful acting ventures she also garnered attention as a spokesperson for women’s equality.

Watson was born in Paris to British parents who divorced when she was young, she moved in with her mother in Oxfordshire, England, along with her brother. Watson made the decision to become an actor when she was a young girl. She studied singing and acting in addition to attending school. She also took part in a number of school plays. Following an audition for a role in the movie adaptation of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling, Watson started acting professionally in 1999. (2001). She was chosen to play Hermione, one of Harry Potter’s closest pals, who is intelligent and sensible. The movie was a box office success, and Watson returned for the entire franchise. Emma Watson was loved for her role as Hermione in Harry Potter and she amassed millions of fans from around the world.

Watson started looking for more serious roles as soon as the Potter movies were over. Her first significant role was in the 2012 drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a film version of the John Green novel in which she played a high school senior who befriends a first-year student with serious depression. Later, she had an appearance in the drama crime The Bling Ring (2013), after that Emma Watson has been unstoppable.

Watson also prioritised her academics, she decided to continue her education while pursuing a career in acting. She started attending Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, in 2009. She studied at the University of Oxford for a full year while taking breaks as needed for filming. With a bachelor’s in English literature, Watson left Brown in 2014. She received the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador title that year. She was a supporter of gender equality and women’s rights. Watson led the Our Shared Shelf feminist book club, an online forum for reading and discussing works by and about women, from 2016 until 2020. Major Virginia Woolf vibes right?

Apart from playing remarkable and iconic roles in Harry Potter and The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, Miss Watson also served legendary roles in films like the 2017 live-action Disney version of Beauty and the Beast which was a smash hit. She starred as Meg March in Greta Gerwig’s critically acclaimed adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved children’s book Little Women in 2019.

Watson is loved not only for her nostalgic roles but also her social contributions. Watson launched “HeForShe”, a project to incorporate males in the discourse about gender equality, after being named a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014. In response to the #metoo discoveries, she donated $1 million to support people who had been sexually harassed and established a legal advice line in England and Wales.

Emma has given her support to many philanthropic organisations over the course of her career, including UNICEF and the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Emma Watson is undoubtedly one of the most respected and adored public figures not just in Hollywood but also outside of it. She embodies the ideal balance of grace, elegance, empathy, and courage.
