The most iconic athletes of all: David Beckham

David Beckham, one of the most well-known athletes in Britain, is also the name of a top-tier global advertising company. From 2000 to 2009, he served as the captain of the English national team. He scored goals in three different FIFA World Cups and was a midfielder for teams in Milan, Madrid, and Manchester, England. While playing with the Los Angeles Galaxy, he also captured the MLS Cup in 2011 and 2012. His parents, hairdresser Sandra Georgina and kitchen fitter David Edward Alan “Ted” Beckham, gave him the name David Robert Joseph Beckham on May 2, 1975, in Leytonstone, East London, England (West). David has referred to Judaism as an influence, and Beckham has a tattoo of the Hebrew words “Song of Songs” from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) on his body despite not being known to practice Judaism or any other religion. Beckham’s paternal grandfather was Jewish. Beckham has always played with long sleeves to conceal his tattoos out of regard for fans who might find them offensive owing to their religious views. He was raised by Manchester United fans and attended Bobby Charlton’s football academy in Manchester. As a youngster, he also gained a spot in an FC Barcelona training session. He served as Manchester United’s mascot in 1986 for their game versus West Ham United.

Beckham played nearly 400 times for Manchester United between 1992 and 2003, although according to his official record, he only scored 62 goals in 265 games against the senior squad. He participated in all of England’s World Cup qualification games in 1998 and scored in a number of significant wins. Although his opponent later admitted to trying to send Beckham off by overreacting to their on-field collision and by pushing the referee to throw Beckham off, he was given a red card for violent behavior in England’s match versus Argentina. Beckham was made the victim and was the subject of criticism and hatred in the media when England lost the game and was eliminated. In 1999–2000, he enjoyed a successful campaign and contributed to Manchester United’s Premier League triumph. His first son, Brooklyn, was born in 1999 after David wed singer Victoria Beckham (née Adams) from the well-known musical group The Spice Girls at that time.

The same year, Beckham received approval to skip a workout session in order to care for his baby Brooklyn, who had a stomach virus. The manager of Manchester United, Alex Ferguson, fined Beckham the highest amount allowed ($80,000 at the time), £50,000, for watching over his sick child while his wife was seen attending a London Fashion Week event the same evening. A severe personal conflict developed between the two men as a result of Ferguson’s assertion that Beckham should be permitted to train if his wife stayed at home that day. After Manchester United’s loss to Arsenal in February 2003, Alex Ferguson entered the locker room and kicked a football boot, which injured Beckham over the eye and required stitches.

David Beckham has been a productive goal scorer and a top draw for the general audience.
