The most valuable player: Lebron James

American basketball phenom LeBron James is presently a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is 250 pounds and six feet eight inches tall. On December 30, 1984, in Ohio, he was born to Gloria Marie James, a 16-year-old single mother. In order for LeBron to grow up in a more fitting environment, Gloria sent him to live with the family of a nearby football coach. LeBron was exposed to basketball here when he was nine years old. He played basketball for his school’s team while he was a student at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. His freshman year team took home the division state championship. NBA scouts routinely visited his games to assess his potential as a future great player because he had already started to establish a reputation as an extraordinary player.

LeBron persisted in winning over fans, earning the titles of “Ohio’s Mr. Basketball” and “USA Today All-USA First Team” throughout his sophomore, junior, and senior years. This was no small feat as he was the first athlete of his age to accomplish both and the only one to have won them three years in a row.

His first year with the Cleveland Cavaliers, when he was signed for the 2003–04 season, saw him set a number of records. Along with finishing his rookie season with an average of at least 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists per game—a feat only Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan had ever achieved—he also turned in the youngest 40-plus point performance in NBA history. LeBron extended his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers by three years and $60 million in 2006.

He won the “Most Valuable Player” Award twice in that duration – once in the 2008-09 season and next in the 2009-10 season. On July 1, 2010 LeBron James became a free agent, which was an option granted to him in his 2006 contract. Of the many teams that wished to sign him, including the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets, and Cleveland Cavaliers, LeBron chose to go with Miami Heat. He announced his decision in a special live show on ESPN and the revenue from the show was given to his chosen charities. His decision was not appreciated by many fans, critics and sports analysts, including former players Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.
