Sonic Drive-In is a chain of fast food restaurants located in the United States and Canada. The restaurants feature walk-up windows, and customers order their food through a speaker-phone like system.The first Sonic Drive-Inopened in 1957 in Park Ridge, Illinois. The company initially installed carhops, but these were replaced by drive-in booths in 1961. In 1979, Sonic became the first restaurant chain to install indoor seating when it opened a restaurant in Schaumburg, Illinois. The first franchise location outside of the United States was opened in 1987 in Calgary, Alberta. There are now over 1,000 Sonic Drive-Ins worldwide.
