Colouring hair is both a choice as well as a necessity. I started colouring my hair very early in life due to a case of premature greying, while I was only 16 years old - I'm 38 now. Gosh, that feels like forever!  Over the years, or rather decades, I have subjected my hair to a lot of atrocities and neglect. I use heat on my hair regularly, do touch-ups every 15 days, and go for highlights or ombre-style colouring at regular intervals. But I don't do anything to actually nourish the hair.  However, I do know a thing or two about how to make coloured hair look good.  Get the right hair colour for your skin tone If your hairdresser recommends a particular brand of shampoo, hair conditioner, or mask for aftercare, use that. I was recommended the Elements shampoo and hair mask ( by my hair stylist as I wanted a sulfate and paraben-free product. I didn't use it regularly though, but don't make my mistake. In general, use salon-grade conditioners/masks. These are much more effective than drugstore products. One can't go wrong with Wella in particular. Go for, or give yourself, a hair spa if possible. Coloured hair tends to get very dry and looks brittle if not conditioned properly. Hair spas nourish and condition the hair deeply, and that results in soft and shiny locks. You can use any homemade hair mask for this purpose. Always use a heat-protectant spray before willing with heat.  For extra shine, use a smoothing or frizz-control serum.
